Disconnection is easy - The real flex is (re)connecting
These days it is SO incredibly easy to disconnect from ourselves, I truly think the real flex is ‘re-connecting to self’. 🧡
What with a multitude of streaming sites, social media platforms, food delivery services, and consumer-driven advertising all available at our fingertips.. And not to mention the consistent messaging we are receiving that we have to look a certain way, eat a certain way, move our bodies a certain way, or we are doing it ‘wrong’…
And that’s not even touching on the way drinking alcohol is apparently THE way to socialise (maybe that’s just my experience around where I’ve grown up) and being highly caffeinated is somehow the ‘normal’ way to live (I don’t hate on caffeine, but I find our society’s seemingly over-reliance on it to be quite disturbing)..
It’s no wonder SO many of us are walking around dazed, confused, and/or disconnected from our true sense of self - Whether we realise it or not. 💁🏻♀️😶🌫️
I have seen the occasional comment on Instagram lately from adults posted to young (I’m talking as young as 10-13 year old) creators, remarking on the fact that these creators aren’t enjoying their life as they ‘should be’ - aka acting their age. They are acting like mini grown ups. I don’t feel I’m in a position to comment on that, except to write that at those ages I didn’t even know what it was like to talk to a boy 😂 let alone be worried about what I looked like with make up, and posting for the world to see my 5-10 step skincare routine (that absolutely did not exist at that age).
I’m sharing all this not to shame or call anyone out - Times are CLEARLY so different now, what, 20 years later.. (I am currently 30 years old HAHA).
BUT I ABSOLUTELY do understand how important it is to PRACTICE and PRIORITISE re-connection to self - To take moments within our day and our weeks to come back to simple questions such as:
💛 ‘What do I actually feel in this moment?’
💛 ‘What do I actually NEED in this moment?’
💛 ‘How am I feeling right now?’
💛 ‘How is my body / my heart right now?’
💛 ‘Do I actually genuinely like the person I am right now?’
💛 ‘Do I actually genuinely enjoy my current routine?’
💛 ’Am I actually living in alignment with my values?’
💛 *’What are my values?’ (if you don’t know them)
It honestly gets to be that simple. And you can make a little ritual out of it too, which can be as simple or as involved as you want, such as:
🌻 A quick breath into your heart space and womb space - to check in with how you’re feeling in those spaces.
🌻 A quick self-pulse check, asking your heart how it is.
🌻 Putting on a song to match your mood and vibing along (movement is key here) - To let your emotional body show you how it’s going.
🌻 Pausing for a moment, changing positions (if you’ve been sitting, stand, and vice versa), stretch out your back, roll out your neck, and notice how your body feels.
Notice that in none of those examples, I am saying that you should stop watching Netflix, scrolling on social media, engaging with your friends, drinking coffee, or shopping.
It’s all about taking moments in your day to just check in with how YOU are doing ~ SEPERATELY ~ to any and all external noise you may be exposed to throughout the day. 🫶🏼
Some final tips to help you lock in these practices as actual practices (rather than something you read once and then forget as soon as you leave this page):
I invite you to set yourself a challenge: 👇🏼
1️⃣ Put a reminder in your phone RIGHT NOW (close out of IG for one moment and I promise you can hop back in straight after)
2️⃣ Open up your alarm app and set an alarm for EVERY DAY, with the title something like ‘check in’.
3️⃣ Every day for the next 7 days, pick one of the above options and check in with your body.
Notice how much more connected you are with your body 7 days into doing this, compared to 7 days earlier (aka today).
Comment below if you’re committing to this challenge (then go back up to step 1️⃣ and ACTUALLY DO IT!!) 😉
Mon xx
